Osaka's rail network is easier to read if you start with two lines: the JR Osaka Loop Line, which circles central Osaka, and the Osaka Metro Midosuji Line, which runs north to south through Shin-Osaka, Umeda, Namba and Tennoji. Flex Railway Map lets you open a map with just these two lines and add others as you need them.
Opens in English with only the JR Osaka Loop Line and the Osaka Metro Midosuji Line shown. You can add or hide other lines from the list on the map.
The JR Osaka Loop Line links Osaka, Kyobashi, Tennoji, Shin-Imamiya and other stations in a circle. The Osaka Metro Midosuji Line runs from Shin-Osaka (the Shinkansen station) through Umeda, Yodoyabashi, Hommachi, Shinsaibashi and Namba to Tennoji. Once you know where these two lines run, it is much easier to see where the other lines cross them.
JR's Osaka Station and the Midosuji Line's Umeda Station have different names but are in the same area. In Namba, Osaka Metro and Nankai use "Namba", Kintetsu and Hanshin use "Osaka-Namba", and JR uses "JR Namba". This is why station names on the map do not always match.
Dotonbori is closest to Namba Station, and the Shinsaibashi-suji Shopping Street to Shinsaibashi Station. For Osaka Castle, use Osaka-jo-koen or Morinomiya on the JR Osaka Loop Line, or Tanimachi-yonchome on the Osaka Metro Tanimachi Line. For Tsutenkaku Tower, use Ebisucho on the Sakaisuji Line or Dobutsuen-mae on the Midosuji Line.
Kansai-Airport Station is served by both Nankai and JR. Nankai trains run via the Nankai Main Line to Namba, and JR trains run toward Tennoji and Osaka.
